Why choose a Registered Psychologist?

It’s important to know that there are different types of professionals that offer counselling services in Edmonton. Psychologists are regulated by the Health Professions Act of Alberta and are held to strict standards of practice. Here is the definition of a Psychologist by the Psychologists Association of Alberta:

Psychologists are regulated health professionals who provide services including psychotherapy, assessment, diagnosis, and research of psychological health and problems. They are trained in evidence-based practices and follow a code of ethics that promotes respect for the dignity and fair treatment. Alberta’s Psychologists have advanced university degrees (Masters or PhD) and undergo extensive supervised training and examinations. Psychologists study the biological, cognitive, emotional, social, cultural, and environmental determinants of behaviour and through such extensive research and practice, Psychologists help people cope more effectively in daily life.

When choosing a Psychologist to undertake your counselling journey with, it’s important to take into consideration their qualifications. Not everyone can call themselves a Psychologist, as this is a protected title; meaning that no one can call themselves a Psychologist unless they are a member in good standing with The College of Alberta Psychologists (Psychologist Directory). Psychologists must complete advanced degrees, undergo multiple examinations, complete supervised practice, and adhere to strict ethical standards. Registered Psychologists are always approved under extended health benefits if your plan covers therapy – others such as Canadian Certified Counsellors (CCC), Registered Professional Counsellors (RPC), or Clinical Social Workers may not be.

What to Expect

psychologist edmonton south - counselling treatment roomWhen you arrive for therapy you will be asked to fill out a few forms. The consent form outlines the parameters for which therapy will be provided, and includes the purpose and nature of the activity, mutual responsibilities, confidentiality protections, and limitations, likely benefits and risks, alternatives, consequences of non-action, option to refuse or withdraw services, period of time covered by the consent, how to rescind consent, fees, and the cancellation policy. Depending on if you would like direct billing, and the insurance company you have, there may be additional forms. The discussion of informed consent is a very important one and the key to an ethical Psychologists’ practice. With therapy, almost everything is confidential. The only exceptions to confidentiality are if:

  • There are reasonable and probable grounds to believe that disclosure is necessary to prevent immediate and grave harm to the client, another person’s mental or physical health or safety, or public safety.
  • This disclosure may be done without the written consent of the client and is required by law.
  • Information disclosed is limited to need to know

The first session with your therapist is a chance for you to tell your story and for the Psychologist to ask questions to understand your situation better. Together you will explore the problem that is bringing you to therapy and the ways you would like to feel different in your life. Your Psychologist will work with you to create a plan to get you where you would like to be and provide strategies to assist with the reduction of symptoms.

Seeking assistance can be a tough choice for people. Clients report that they are often nervous coming to the first session. A Psychologist is licensed and trained to assist in those very situations. People say that once they start sharing their stories with their therapist, the fear starts to dissipate, and they often experience relief from the discussion and creating a plan for change.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How do I know if I need to see a psychologist?

Some signs that you may need to speak with a therapist are changes in your mood or well-being, difficulty coping with day-to-day life, or big changes in your life. In the first session, the psychologist will explore what is going on and recommend a treatment plan. They may diagnose you with a mental health condition or depending on your presenting issue, refer you to a more appropriate provider. If you feel you may need counselling, the best approach is to attend a session and see what the psychologist recommends. If they don’t think you need therapy, they will let you know that as well.

Do I need a referral to attend?

No. No referral is necessary to become a client at our clinic. Clients can book in as they choose. Psychologists are not covered under Alberta Health Care, and each person decides if that is something they wish to pursue. Some extended health benefits may require a referral from a doctor for direct billing coverage. This usually comes in the form of a “prescription” and is not given to our clinic. Please check with your individual extended health insurance for more information about the requirements for using extended health benefits.

Does insurance cover the cost of a session?

Extended health benefits may cover all or a portion of the cost of your session. Psychology sessions are not covered by Alberta Health Care. Check with your insurance provider to see how much is covered per year and if you can submit using direct billing. We can direct bill several insurance companies. Contact our office to discuss your specific situation.

Which psychologist is a good fit for me?

One of the key aspects of having a successful experience in therapy is your ability to connect with and feel comfortable with your psychologist. Each person is different, and each psychologist is different. If you try a psychologist and it’s not the right fit for you, please try someone else. Our psychologist’s biographies are online to provide more information about them and how they practice therapy. Reading through these is a good start to see if any feel like a good fit. You can also call our clinic to speak with our administration team who does a wonderful job of pairing up clients and psychologists.

Can I see someone virtually? Do I have to attend in person?

We provide services to people in person in our south Edmonton office, as well as online. We can provide psychological services to any resident of Alberta. Phone or video sessions are a great option for convenience and for people who live outside of a major city center. You can book online sessions through our booking portal or by calling our office. We can speak over the telephone or use video conferencing software. Please note for virtual sessions, you will need to be in Alberta during the time of the call.
