Anxiety Treatment - Edmonton

Believe it or not, anxiety isn’t always a bad thing. It’s our body’s natural way of responding to perceived danger and stress. It protects us. You’ve probably heard about the fight-flight-freeze response – that’s our body’s way of preparing to deal with danger.

When we’re in uncomfortable situations, our brain can misread the risks and overreact. This is when anxiety can become a problem: your brain perceives a danger that isn’t really there, and the worrying and fear aren’t temporary anymore. Often, the anxiety doesn’t go away easily and can get worse over time. It becomes overbearing and starts interfering with daily life.

Why should you see a therapist for anxiety?

If you suffer from anxiety, you know that it’s not always comfortable being in your own skin. You’re tense, your muscles hurt, you’re tired and the butterflies in your stomach don’t go away. But you don’t have to live like that.

Since anxiety is a natural way for our body to deal with danger, it’s impossible to make anxiety go away completely. But, we can help you find coping strategies that work for you when anxiety strikes so that your anxiety becomes manageable. We’ll work together to come up with ways to rethink your worries, have a better relationship with your inner critic and challenge the un-useful worrying.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How long does the treatment take?

On average, treatments last between four and 10 sessions, but it all depends on the person and their unique situation. When you come in for your first session, your psychologist will create an individualized plan with you based on your symptoms and your conversation together.

Will I always have anxiety?

Not necessarily! It depends on the person and what’s causing their anxiety. During therapy sessions, your psychologist will work with you to develop tools so that your day-to-day life is easier to manage. Some people experience total remission from anxiety symptoms.

It’s important to remember that life has its natural ebbs and flows, so it’s normal for anxiety to return at another point in time. That may be frustrating to hear, but the good news is that the tools you develop now will help you in the future. You’ll likely notice that you’re able to deal with your anxiety symptoms better and more quickly the next time around.

What if my anxiety is too high to come to a session?

We feel for you! When anxiety becomes overwhelming and unbearable, it’s tough being in your own skin. Some techniques you can use for relief are:

  • Take deep breaths. When we say deep, we mean it. Your breath in should be so deep that you can’t possibly suck any more air in. Slowly let the air out.
  • Limit caffeine. Those morning coffees can amplify your existing anxiety. Try sticking to water for the time being.
  • Do comforting things. Make yourself a cup of tea (non-caffeinated, of course), wrap yourself up in a blanket or take a warm bath.
  • Most importantly, be kind to yourself. You’re doing what you can right now, so don’t be hard on yourself if you didn’t get to things you needed to do.
  • It may be beneficial to speak to your physician about what you are going through. They can help.

Keep in mind that these tools are temporary. The best thing you can do for yourself when your anxiety is at an all-time high is to see a psychologist and your doctor. Our office is calm and comfortable, and you’ll get to talk to someone who’s experienced in what you’re going through. You’re not alone in this!

In addition to anxiety treatment, Boost Psychology provides services for a variety of issues including trauma, burnout, depression, chronic pain management, grief, stress, life transitions, and relationship difficulties. Our therapists have training in various evidence-based modalities. We believe it’s key to listen to you to get a thorough understanding of what’s going on in your life. This is an important step before working towards the resolution of the program. Give our office a call today to discuss your options and work towards creating a healthier and less anxious you.
